About the Role

We are looking for a Plant Operator to join our clients highways team. You will help maintain roads and footpaths, operate machinery, and support construction and maintenance work across Leicestershire (and occasionally nearby areas).

You’ll work as part of a team but should be comfortable working independently day-to-day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy machinery such as tractors, roadmenders, and horticultural equipment
  • Work safely on public roads, following traffic management rules
  • Carry out general highway maintenance (e.g. grass cutting, hedge trimming, road repairs)
  • Follow health and safety procedures at all times
  • Keep training records up to date
  • Support other tasks as required by your manager
  • Promote equality and fair treatment for everyone

Working Conditions

  • May include early starts, nights, and weekend work
  • Work begins and ends at site or depot
  • You must travel to and from work locations yourself
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Training and development opportunities will be provided

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Basic reading, writing, and maths skills
  • Experience using plant machinery safely
  • Knowledge of working on public highways and traffic management
  • Ability to measure and calculate (e.g. areas, volumes)
  • Full driving licence and own transport
  • Willingness to travel and work outdoors in all conditions

Desirable (but not required)

  • CSCS Health & Safety certificate
  • NVQ Level 2 in Highway Maintenance (or similar)
  • Roadworker or plant operator qualifications (e.g. NPORS, NRSWA)
  • Experience driving heavy goods vehicles or forklifts
  • Health & safety training (e.g. IOSH)

Other Information

  • You may be asked to attend training courses or meetings
  • Expenses are paid in line with council policies
  • The role may change slightly over time
